Annual State Conference Award Nomination FAQs

2020 Award of Excellence Recipient:
Monika Helmen, Manager, Anoka-Hennepin Adventures Plus

Over the past 40+ years, Monika has worked to provide quality care and services for children and families, and has taken the lead in many ways to bring professionalism and a greater awareness to the field of afterschool, which continues to make an impact today.

Monika has been a champion for diversity awareness and inclusion, both in the Anoka-Hennepin district and in the field of afterschool. She worked hard to build relationships between Adventures Plus and school staff, which helped to establish the school-age care staff as professionals.

Monika quickly became involved with MnSACA and its initiatives. She was a key member of the advisory group that helped to create the newest version of MAAP. She was involved with the revision of the Minnesota School-Age Care Guidelines, a collaboration between MnSACA and MCEA. She facilitated the metro SAC director’s forum and helped to create the west metro OST forum meetings.

Monika retired in January 2020 and though she will be missed, her impact will be felt for many years in the field of afterschool.

2020 Yvonne Schneider Distinguished Member Award Recipient:
Marty Elmquist, Site Supervisor, Robbinsdale Adventure Club

Marty has a BA degree in Physical Education and Coaching from Bethel University. He has been the Site Supervisor at Robbinsdale Area School’s Adventure Club in Plymouth since August 1999. He was an Adventure Club teacher there for six years prior, making his service there at 25+ years. Marty’s kindness and dedication to his staff and children at the Robbinsdale site has been remarkable. His wisdom and dedication are the two traits mentioned by his staff most often.

Marty has served on the MnAEYC-MnSACA Annual State Conference Planning Committee since 2009, and was the committee chair from 2012-2014. He has also presented at the conference on various topics to inspire and encourage others in the field. Through Marty’s work on the Annual Conference Planning Committee, he has contributed many ideas and much support and hard work over so many years. He has demonstrated his commitment to being a MnSACA member by reaching out to others in the area, as well as the state, through his work on the committee and by helping to make the conference the best it can be.
