Summer Leadership Institute Archive

MnAEYC-MnSACA invites you to the newest event for current and aspiring trainers, coaches and mentors in the early childhood and afterschool fields.

Take this opportunity for personal and professional renewal and growth, where you will identify new strategies for increasing trust and authenticity in training, coaching, mentoring, and professional development.

This event features Kamyala Howard, MSW, LCSW, Founder and Lead Consultant - WE'RE Divine: Intercultural, Diversity, Community Development and Program Consulting.

Understanding Cross-Cultural Experiences and Implicit Biases

In this session, participants will increase their understanding of culturally responsive practices and gain tools for working and communicating effectively across cultural differences. We will use the culture of learning theory, Mitchell R. Hammer, Ph.D.'s Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory (ICS), and Dr. Milton J. Bennett's Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) to prove that one size indeed doesn't fit all.

As leaders, it is our responsibility to always ask questions, voice challenges, share ideas/success stories, make room to learn new skills and create opportunities to practice interacting across multiple lines of differences. The challenging task is to lean into the unknown areas of discussion and content that are often avoided in order to cultivate your transformation and growth.

Kamyala Howard is the Founder and CEO of "WE'RE DIVINE," President of khowardconsultingllc, and Co-Founder of African American Community of Practice. Ms. Howard has over 22 years of experience working with non-profit and private agencies creating innovative models that assist with organizational cultural change, dismantling barriers, program design, strategic planning, leadership development, direct clinical practice, and building intercultural relations. She is a licensed mental health practitioner, and continues to build a large network through community outreach, collaborating and advocating for systems change.
