Early childhood and afterschool professionals are always a critical service in our communities, and during this difficult and unprecedented time, we thank you for all you are doing for children and families, and for each other.

Yesterday, Sunday, March 15, the Governor issued an executive order authorizing the temporary closure of K-12 public schools to students in order for school administrators and teachers to make long-term plans for the continuity of education and essential services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools will be closed to students by Wednesday, March 18-Friday March 27 to accommodate this planning.

His order does NOT recommend childcare centers or family child care close at this time.

Governor Walz and the Department of Human Services issued new guidance for child care programs, which you can see here. They’ve also launched a hotline that child care providers can call with any questions: 1-888-234-1268. School-age care programs that use child care assistance should use this line too.

Contact the Department of Health with any questions about COVID-19: 651-201-3920 or 1-800-657-3903.

NAEYC has also issued this statement in support of early childhood educators. We will be sharing this with government officials and policymakers and we encourage you to also share this with your state and federal level policymakers.

The federal House of Representatives passed a $50 billion relief package, and the Senate will likely take it up early this week. We will be in touch when we have more specifics of what is in the bill.

We are also concerned about the impact this is having on all of you in the early childhood and afterschool fields. Please be in touch with us at info@mnaeyc-mnsaca.org with the challenges you are facing, so we can relay these challenges to state departments, state and federal policymakers, and assist you in any way we can.
