Summer is in Full Swing

The Fourth of July is, unbelievably, just a week away! Before you take off for some rest and relaxation, be sure to register for Summer Leadership Institute, submit a proposal for our Annual State Conference and apply for NAEYC’s Young Professional Advisory Council (YPAC).

We're having our Summer Leadership Institute on July 20. Consider taking a day for your own learning and growth. Our theme of inspiring leadership in ourselves and in others is timely and critically important to providing quality care and education to the children we serve.

We're also accepting proposals for our Annual State Conference, due July 23. This is a great opportunity for both experienced and new trainers to share your knowledge with 1,000 of your fellow early childhood and afterschool professionals.

Hannah Riddle, a current member of YPAC, a member of several MnAEYC-MnSACA committees and owner of Semillitas Bilingual Training Service, encourages young people to get involved and shape your professions.

Join us and be inspired at this year’s Summer Leadership Institute, (Re)Imagine the Power of You: Inspiring Experienced and Emerging Leaders on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Normandale Community College. Our Institute is designed specifically for current and aspiring leaders in both the early childhood and afterschool professions.

Submit Your Presentations Today

We’re looking for your submissions to our Annual State Conference. Sessions should meet the professional and personal development needs of program directors & coordinators, teachers, and front-line staff in early childhood and afterschool programs. Breakout sessions should present best practices, innovative and evidence-based strategies, research and resources in a variety of topic areas.

A Time for Young Professionals to Lead

Historically, leadership in the field of early childhood education has included professionals who have been in the field for considerable amounts of time. Recognizing the changing landscape of professionals working in the field of early childhood education, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) saw an opportunity to engage young professionals as leaders and created the Young Professionals Advisory Council (YPAC) in November 2015. Members of YPAC come from across the country and are between the ages of 20 and 30, have been in the field for at least a year, and are dedicated to improving the early childhood profession. YPAC members provide insight on how to strengthen recruitment, as well as retain and engage young professionals through content, events, activities, and more.

I’ve served on the YPAC for a year now and it’s given me insight into the fundamental changes that our profession is experiencing and how NAEYC is leading those efforts. It’s also fueled my passion for the field and my drive to influence the course of its development.

For the young professionals out there, here are five reasons you should consider applying for YPAC. Applications are due on July 7.

1. Your voice will shape our future. The field of early childhood education is establishing itself as a profession. Are the issues nearest and dearest to your heart being considered? Our future is bright, and it would be even brighter with your insight.


2. You’re only a young professional once. In other words, YOLO. Don’t be a victim of FOMO.


3. You can put your expertise to use. There are three different committees within YPAC: Events, Content, and Leadership. Once you are selected as a member of YPAC, you can pick up to two committees where you can put your expertise to use. Love planning events? Covered. Like to make rules and weigh in on organizational procedures? We’ve got that, too! Writing blogs and articles? Welcome aboard!


4. The struggle is real. We need young professionals to join NAEYC, participate, and serve in leadership positions. If it’s not your voice, it’s someone else’s—make sure your voice is heard!


5. Relationships. Working with fellow YPAC members and NAEYC leadership has been fantastic. My professional network has expanded and I’m grateful for the range of opinions, expertise, and leadership opportunities I’ve been exposed to.

It’s time to get involved and use your voice. This is YOUR career, and OUR profession.
