2018 Award of Excellence Recipient:
PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center

PACER Center was established in 1977. Its mission is to "enhance the quality of life and expand opportunities for children, youth, and young adults with all disabilities and their families so each person can reach his or her highest potential."

PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center was founded in 2006 when PACER Center staff noted that parents of children with disabilities were calling more frequently about bullying situations.

They raise awareness around the existence and effect of bullying through community events. They have developed many materials & resources for parents, curriculum for teachers, and ways for kids & teens to educate themselves & others about what bullying is and how to stand against it, inviting everyone to take action.

What started as a local organization has, in just 11 years, spread not just across the state of Minnesota, but across the nation and around the world. Over 1,000,000 people visit PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center website each year, and more still share the ideas and resources they find with their children, parents, schools and communities.

2018 Yvonne Schneider Distinguished Member Award Recipient:
Yvonne Schneider, St. Paul Public Schools

We are proud to announce that the MnSACA Distinguished Member Award will now be known as the Yvonne Schneider Distinguished Member Award in honor of Yvonne, who exemplified what it means to be a committed and engaged afterschool professional.

Yvonne's love for working with children started with her other's home daycare and her involvement in Girl Scouts.

She acquired her Elementary Education degree at St. Cloud State University in 1992, and within a few months began her work with kids at St. Paul Public Schools Discovery Club. With the exception of one year teaching third grade for St. Paul Public Schools, she continued her career at Discovery Club. After that one year, she returned to Discovery Club, stating that she loved the ability to pursue and share her passions when working in school-age care. "They haven't figured out yet that they are paying me to play!"

Yvonne's philosophy was that she was the "bookends" to children's learning - providing fun, enriching activities on either end of their school day to help "hold in" the learning. Though her passion was in the arts, she challenged herself to create and lead engaging activities that capitalized on the varying interests of her students throughout the years.

Yvonne challenged herself even further over the past few years by presenting "(Re)Imagine the Power of Youth: A New Twist on Board Games and Building Cities, Building Community" at the 2017 MnAEYC-MnSACA Annual State Conference and Super School-Age Saturday.

Yvonne passed away on November 24, 2017. Her final message to the kids was, "Be Your Best You."
