Every session time slot has an equal number of early childhood and school-age sessions. There are also adult development sessions to choose from. These sessions are appropriate for all participants, regardless of age group. 

 

All trainers have received the following message about our audience: Trainers, please remember that if your session is not specific to a target audience that your audience will represent professionals who work with youth from infant to 18 years old. Please be prepared to make sure all are welcomed and covered in the training.

D01. Connecting With Infants, Toddlers and Two: How the Environment Impacts Learning and Behavior 
How we design our classrooms and early childhood spaces can have a profound impact on how children interact with each other, behave and gain developmental skills. This class will share a variety of strategies to help you reflect on your current space and help identify some new opportunities to promote a positive space for both teachers and children.

D02. NAEYC's Streamlined Accreditation Model: What's Up?
Beginning in January 2018 programs seeking to become NAEYC Accredited or those that are renewing their accreditation will be participating in a new, streamlined accreditation model. This session will present an overview of the new model, discuss changes from the previous model and highlight new tools and resources.

D03. It Takes THREE to Tango: The Dance of the Opportunity, the Context and the Content in the Learning Environment.
Everybody is looking for the key to quality. The key that would open the door for every learner and teacher to enter the landscape of in-depth, research based learning. D04. Fostering Developmentally Appropriate Learning Environments through Intentional Teaching Methods
This session will help early childhood professionals identify developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) for children birth through grade three focusing on intentional teaching methods that shape the environment and guide the curriculum. D06. Using Reflective Practices to Facilitate Professional Growth
Promoting the professional growth of others is very challenging. The current research suggests that the use of reflective practice principles in coaching is highly effective in promoting behavior change and professional growth. This session will provide an introduction to the goals and process of reflective practice, including listening, paraphrasing, and crafting coaching questions. There will be time provided to practice these skills.

D10. Restorative Practices: Foundations and Principles
Restorative Practices place healthy communities and relationships at the center of all we do. Creating a restorative school or program starts with the mindset of the adults and their day-to-day interactions with students and each other. This session will explore the roots, foundations and principles involved in the restorative way of being and participants will experience a brief restorative circle.

E01. Supporting Little Children When They Face Big Challenges
Sometimes children come to our programs with big challenges, including homelessness, parental incarceration or wrestling with gender identity. In this workshop we'll talk about harnessing the power of story to build young children's resilience and peer support networks in the face of difficult life events.

E02. Cross-Cultural Competence is Not as Hard as it Looks
Cross-cultural competence is not easy, but it is highly manageable. Explore how it can be practiced with care and respect for all children, families, and colleagues. This session includes elements of NAEYC developmentally appropriate practice and ethical standards, early childhood progress indicators, best practices in adult development, and the principles of anti-bias education.

E03. Understanding Multigenerational Trauma Through a Developmental Lens
Participants will understand key components of early childhood development and how social emotional development may go awry. They will learn how supporting primary caregivers is essential in promoting early childhood mental health. Participants will also learn what the early childhood mental health system looks like in Minnesota and how to access mental health services in their local communities. There will be one case example and a discussion.

E07. A Different Literacy Lens – Using Social and Emotional Learning as a Focus for Literacy Before and After School
Using the work of Pam Allyn and Dr. Ernest Morrell, participants will review and discuss how the combination of literacy skills, engagement strategies and social-emotional development learning needs can positively impact student learning. Participants in this session will explore strategies for before and after school learning time that positively impact learning.

E08. No One Likes a Bully: Bullies and Bullying in School-Age Settings
Bullying often goes undetected in school age settings. In fact, adults typically identify less than 10 percent of bullying incidents -- partly because bullying tends to occur in unsupervised areas and partly because many adults simply do not understand the dynamics of bullying. In this workshop, the concept of bullying is explored on many levels, including, how to spot bullying, what the word bullying means, interrupting bullying behaviors, strategies for supporting targets, victims, bullys and bystanders. Tips, strategies and resources are included in this workshop session.

E09. Disability Awareness: Recognizing and Navigating Your Biases Towards Students With Disabilities

F04. Do Ants Have Teeth? Teaching Science Through Meaningful Inquiry that Engages Children’s Minds 
Project-based investigations enable children to actively explore topics that are relevant to their lives. F06. Your Daily Interactions with Students with Special Needs

Just as the title suggests, attendees will learn how to present sensitive material and navigate sensitive conversations with young people. Attendees will learn skills and steps to take when confronted with a young person’s disclosures and have an opportunity to practice scenarios and examples of common difficult student questions.

F10. Building ESTEAM with STEM
Let's grow! Participants will do green engineering design challenges; discuss "letting kids lead"; reflect on student empowerment, self-esteem, and sustainability. ESTEAM (environment, science, technology, engineering, art, and math) builds on the STEM philosophy while strengthening learning communities and systems thinking.

SAS1. Roundabout Leadership: Leading in All Directions
A roundabout is a type of circular intersection in which traffic flows almost continuously in one direction around a central island, able to flow out of (and into) various directions seamlessly without stopping. Many people populate the intersections of our programs, including supervisors, support staff, children and families. To make the most of this journey toward quality environments and experiences, every traveler must serve as a model of leadership. Through conversations, videos, and activities, this session will help each participant to identify his or her own leadership potential - gaining insight and inspiration about how to lead in all directions to positively impact students and families.

SAS2. Engineering a Rube Goldberg Contraption: 12-part curriculum for grades 3-8
Attend this session to learn about the 12-part Rube Goldberg Curriculum developed by staff from Minnesota and Purdue Extension and the Minnesota STEM Center. The curriculum was developed to support adult educators who will lead groups of youth through a series of 45-minute activities to create opportunities for youth to develop communication skills, teamwork, and solve engineering problems.

SAS3. Reggio Principles as a Field Guide to Learning: Our Experiences in a Nature-Based Preschool
Using the principles of the Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Childhood Education as a "field guide" to learning has many benefits in any early childhood program and is an exceptionally useful guide in any nature-based program. The image of the child, role of the teacher, importance of time, careful consideration of the environment, and value placed on relationships coupled with the processes of observation, reflection, and documentation work together to enhance the children's school and learning experiences. This approach also supports developmentally appropriate learning experiences for children and opportunities for insight and growth professionally .

SAS4. Implementing STEM is Easy  
Don't be afraid to implement STEM into your programs. In this session you will walk away with some long term project ideas that could span over days or weeks. You can see how the same project can work for both older and younger ages with just a few changes.
